So, in preparing for my first 6-hour early childhood workshop, I feel like there are a lot of new things I need to create/find/make.

Any experienced facilitators/coordinators out there have a list of 'must have' materials for these early childhood workshops?

I am going through the guide and creating a list of materials needed for each activity. I will gladly post it once I get it completed. But...if anyone else has already done this, please post it and save me the time!!!

Thanks,
Rob

Must have materials for EC workshops:
* CD player
* scissors for everyone
* crayons for everyone
* paper plates for everyone
* art items for everyone (E.g. tp tubes, pine needles, twigs, leaves, pebbles, etc.

(sharing is still being learned at preschool, so to emulate a preschool classroom, it's best not to make participants share, unless they really want to)

Prep boxes for a couple activity (learning) centers that participants can visit passively: woodworking, music makers, dramatic play areas, etc. I use a large tray and stock it with sensory table items like acorns, seeds, leaves, etc.. I have a collection of logs for bark rubbings, sensory (bark) activities. I have a math and manipulatives center that consists of straight twigs of equal lengths, unifix cubes, egg cartons with rocks and shells to sort, large laminated sheet of graph paper, etc.

If you show off some of the recommended books (kid books or teacher reference books) make sure you have a literature list as a handout.

Ok. Here is a list of materials I put together from looking over the activities. I probably missed an item or eight so use this list as a suggestion not a definite. Hope it helps.

Wow - thanks Rob! We are gearing up for Wyoming's first EC PLT/WILD workshop later this month. Your supply list really helps. I appreciate your addition of the books with their ISBN numbers as well. It's nice to not have to reinvent the wheel every time!

I really wanted to be able to do the 'Dances with Leaves' portion of the Activity One outside, and not have to worry about paper blowing away. So I went shopping at our local creative reuse center - and got some carpet squares for $1.00 apiece. A little help from my artistic husband, and I suddenly had stencils that I could paint onto the carpet. I made 12 total... my favorite is the yellow poplar leaf, though I don't know how easy that will be for students to replicate with their bodies!

Putting the final touches on materials for our first EC workshop on Saturday. Thought I would share with you my materials for Three Cheers for Trees - Featured Experience Decorating Trees. I do something similar for k-8 workshops... but really wanted the feel of kids putting leaves on trees. The pics/words I just cut/pasted from my k-8 activity. I wanted to demonstrate how you could use Spanish/English with this activity, or just build vocabulary, or just work on identifying items (this is why all the wording is different).

The attached file is a pdf - originally created in Publisher. If you want the original to mess around with - let me know. Feel free to use as is! I have cut out the leaves and laminated them to put on a paper/blackboard tree. I will try and to remember to take a pic of the final product to share, too!

First workshop was a success! Though I did learn one interesting item I thought I would share.... I was told that toilet paper tubes are a no-no for daycare centers because of their potential to carry germs. Paper towel tubes were an unknown. However, the teachers had absolutely no problems with creating the binoculars with cardstock... which luckily I had as well. A good size is 6"x5".

Anyone else run into this problem?

I have also attached our agenda.

Great - no toilet paper rolls for day cares. What am I going to do with the 62 rolls we gathered for our workshop?? Actually, I did give this some thought. I think I came up with another alternative. The purpose of the TP binoculars is to focus attention. I created some craft stick "picture frames" for my students. We will go for a picture frame walk today and test the theory. If they hold their picture frames at arms length, they should be able to focus on a given item. This is an extension of the "window on the world" idea.

My students this year are grades K, 1, 2, 3, and 5. I will let you know how the picture frame idea worked.

Anybody want to buy 62 toilet paper rolls?
